I have found that a great side effect of retiring is time to think:
about life the universe and underwear.

What do you have time to do/think?

As part of my LBYM retirement lifestyle, I have given up underwear. Besides, here in Phoenix it's too warm to wear anymore than you have to.

When I have to leave the house, I need to wear shoes & a bra (at least in summer). I have found if I wear clean underwear every day, I can wear the same jeans for several days.

That's not very much. Very Happy Very Happy

I was kidding about abandoning underwear, but during the Summer I do often go all day without wearing more than a pair of gym shorts and a T-shirt. If I leave the house I usually put on a pair of shorts with pockets, a belt, shoes and socks. I wear underwear then too. My need for any clothing more formal than jeans and a polo shirt are almost completely gone. My standards for "worn out" have also changed in retirement. A hole or a paint splotch only add character to my retirement wardrobe.

Very Happy

I booked a cruise to Antarctica for December. I'm pretty sure I'm going to need warm underwear down there.

I've looked into a couple of Antarctica cruises. I would really like to go. There are a few snags I'm working on for now. I haven't convinced my wife that it's worth the money yet. Part of the problem is that you have to do it with a cruise package and we have never been very big on cruises or packaged tours. Also, we are already overbooked on travel through the end of this year, so I'm thinking next year at the earliest.

I'm curious about details of your trip and would love to hear how it goes when you get back. You'll have to get a picture of yourself next to a penguin for all of us.

Very Happy

Yeah, cool! What possessed you to go to down there? - I would like to hear all about it when you return.

- I've been to some pretty remote places on the planet, but usually to fish and The south Pole is lacking in fishing. I've been to Tierra Del Fuego though, which is pretty close. And I've been fishing 400 Miles North of the Arctic Circle on Victoria Island - NorthWest Territories.

I love remote places, but there's a lot on my list ahead of Antarctica - Like an African Safari. - But I could see myself going to Antarctica. It's an expensive jaunt however. I suppose you followed the news story of the Cruise Ship that had a mishap there last year? - I think it hit an iceberg? - Set me straight on this.

Yeah, that was the M.V. Explorer

It's surprising that the first cruise ship specifically designed and built for Antarctic travel was the first to sink there.

After having a great time seeing Alaska's glaciers this summer, I decided to check out Chile's glaciers and Antarctica before everything melts.

I'll post pictures and and a review of the trip when I return in January.

My wife and I have booked a Dec. cruise from Buenos Aires around Cape Horn, through the Chilean fjords and ending up in Valparaiso (Santiago), Chile. One of the optional day trips is a helo trip from the Beagle Channel area to Antarctica (there is a peninsula that sticks up to the north in that area.) But it's $2K for the one day excursion, and that's a bit rich for my blood.

My cruise starts in Santiago (Port of Valpariaso) and ends in Rio di Janeiro. Here's a review from someone who took the trip last year (in a reverse itinerary starting from Rio.)

I'm planning to get to Santiago 5 days ahead of the cruise so that I can take a trip across the Andes Mountains to Mendoza, Argentina. They've cut a spectacular highway through the Andes. Here's a slide show from a Brit that took the trip last year.

and an article describing the winter traffic jams on the road,

Thanks for passing those links along. Our cruise hits some of the same ports that yours does and the info in the first link will be very helpful. We spent almost a week in Buenos Aires about 2 years ago and loved it. The exchange rate was pretty good and we ate like royalty at very reasonable prices.

South America had never been on our radar screen for travel until my daughter, who was volunteering at a medical mission in Peru, suggested we meet her at the conclusion of her session. So my wife and I toured the Inca sites while my daughter was working. We linked up with my daughter and went to Argentina for the week. Really turned us on to SA.
