SG, I vaguely recall that either you or I, on ER.org, talked about BLS statistics about early retirement and how many people retire early because they are disabled. These are people who are generally unhealthy and not necessarily eligible for social security disability.
Do you remember anything about this? I can't seem to find anything.

Martha,
I spent a lot of time mining the BLS web site for statistics about 2- 3 years ago when I was researching Engineering Your Retirement. I recall reviewing statistics on social security early retirees and social security disability etc. But I don't recall the specific thread you are talking about. Of course I haven't visited ER for some time.
The BLS site is filled with interesting data and analysis. I would be surprised if the data you are looking for isn't there. Unfortunately, that web site was apparently organized and designed by a dyslexic 5 year old. Exploring their web site was always an adventure. I almost never found what I was looking for, but always found something interesting. Weeks or months later when I wanted to re-find something I had stumbled across earlier, I was almost never able to find it again. I finally got in the habit of simply saving any data I ran across that interested me. If there is some specific data you are interested in I might be able to find it in my own BLS database.

Thanks. What I remember one of us finding was some statistics that showed a large number of people retired at 62 or before for health reasons. Oh well, I will poke around and see what I can find. I can't seem to find it on ER.org.
How you doing? Any good adventures lately? |

Martha,
I believe I do remember that discussion and those stats. I spent a little bit of time trying to relocate them. As has happened to me in the past, I had a pleasant adventure discovering lots of interesting statistics about social security, retirement, etc. but was not able to find the data at BLS.
You might want to check out this paper, though.
http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/1000207_retire_factors.pdf
I haven't had a chance to go through all of it, but it is filled with lots of statistics on health and retirement age.
Page iv: | Quote: | | The comparisons by health status in this study reveal that retirees are in poorer health than workers of the same age and are more likely to have a condition that limits or prevents work. |
Page v: | Quote: | | The reason for labor force departure varies by age: the younger a worker when leaving a job, the more likely it is that the departure is involuntary, whether the result of job loss or poor health. Only one-quarter of workers leaving a job between ages 55 and 61 retire voluntarily, compared to over one-half of those leaving a job at or after age 62. |
Page 8, Table 1a: gives statistics on health status, conditions that limit work, and functional limitations for both retirees and workers by age.
........................................worker.......retiree
HEALTH STATUS
excellent...........................19%.............10%
very good.........................33%.............21%
good.................................34%.............29%
fair...................................11%.............22%
poor...................................2%.............18%
CONDITION THAT LIMITS WORK AT JOB
yes..................................11%.............42%
prevents working...............n/a..............82%
does not prevent working....n/a.............18%
no....................................89%............58%
There is lots more information and data.
I'm doing fine, martha. Thanks for asking. Hope you are doing well too.
I retired early so I could go on adventures and that's what I've been doing. Last year JJ and I spent somewhere between 20 and 25 weeks traveling. This year I've already spent a week in Florida, a week in Southern Illinois and Louisville, KY, plus several days in Southern California/Los Angels being a tourist. Also spent a week near La Junta, CO recording rock art. I've spent 12 days near Nogales, AZ working on two different archaeology projects. I've been helping with an excavation of an early Spanish Presido and also recording prehistoric rock art near Rio Rico. I leave in two weeks to spend two weeks in Israel and then spend a week in Wroclaw, Poland. I am driving across the country in June to spend a week in Atlanta. I'll spend another week in Southern California/Monterey in November. Later this year I am visiting Amsterdam and I will also be going to Gold Coast, Australia. I also have another archaeology field trip to Colorado planned in the Fall.
Hope you are keeping busy and enjoying life too. I often envy your RV when I'm traveling around North America. Camping in La Junta, CO in March was cold and windy in my little camper shell. I didn't even try to camp when I went back to Illinois and Kentucky in February. _________________ -=sgeeeee=- |

| SG, the paper you cited was excellent and it will help me locate some other information I need as well. I am still lobbying for some kind of national health care system. I also found an interesting article you cited on ER.org at http://www.bls.gov/ore/pdf/ec040010.pdf that talks about relatively young men who are not in the work force. |
